Walking Tours of Dublin in Irish for School Groups
Bookings are now open for our Walking Tours of Dublin in Irish for Secondary School students, perfect for transition year and leaving cert groups (15 - 18 years).
Our tours are a fun way for students to immerse themselves in the French, Irish, Spanish or English language while exploring Dublin's must-see sights like Wood Quay, Dublin Castle, the old city walls, Dubh Linn gardens and Christchurch Cathedral as well of plenty of anecdotes and less well-known stories:
-
The mapping of Ireland in the early 19th century by the British Army and the haphazard translation of placenames into English.
-
The reason why Tayto have both English and Irish on their cheese and onion packets.
-
Words and phrases that came into English from Irish. Did you know the American the phrase "You dig?" came from "an dtuigeann tú?" when the Irish and black communities were living together in the US.
There is also a quiz that runs through the tour where one (or two for bigger groups) students will win a t-shirt. As well as spot prized for students who can answer some questions during the tour.
Your guide Alan worked as an actor for 15 years before setting up Dublin à Pied in 2024.
He did not grow up speaking Irish outside of school but re-learned Irish last year to take part in a TG4 tv series called Crá and found a real grá for the language. There is a section of the tour that covers that too, the things Alan loves about the language and the opportunities out there today for people with Irish.
The tours lasts approx 90 minutes and include a short toilet break in the middle.
Tours are available Monday to Friday with the start time of your choice between 9am and 3pm (From November to Febraury, tours are available Tuesday to Friday).
One tour can accommodate between 20 and 40 students.
The price is €15 per student.
You will receive a worksheet with key vocab to prepare / revise with the students before or after your tour.
Depending on the group's level of Irish, Alan will translate more or less of the tour into English as we go along.
Swapping the classroom for the streets of Dublin, our tour gives students the opportunity to see Irish as a living language.
